" It was the third incarnation of Queen I'd witnessed having seen and worked with the original Freddie line up and then Paul Rogers a few years back. This time it was Adam Lambert who they'd picked up after meeting and playing with him on the talent show ,"American Idol". I'd seen a concert on You Tube with him fronting the band in Kiev in his early days with them and I have to say I wasn't that impressed. I was trying to keep an open mind on this show.
The production was pretty spectacular as you'd expect. A huge logo'd drape in front of the stage whipped away into the massive trusses opened proceedings and the tall shadow in a typical Freddie Mercury pose that had been there moments before was revealed as a leather cladded, stud bedecked, rayban wearing fit looking dude who immediately made me think of a young George Michael.
The set list was pretty much what I'd heard before and the hits were rolled out to a ravenous crowd eager for their Queen fix. The band were on form and they cruised through the set with Adam Lambert leaving Roger and Brian solo spots they took on with style.
As expected Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You and Champions delivered the coup de gras to a crowd in front of whom they could do no wrong.
I enjoyed the gig as a spectacle and the overall sound and performances were great.I have to be honest and say that I wasn't taken with Adam Lambert. He has a fantastic voice, although too many of those trills for my liking, hits all the notes and looks good but in my opinion he lacks presence.Maybe it's because I will always compare him to Freddie and no one will ever get close to him. But Paul Rogers was commanding when he was in the band and he stood tall with Roger and Brian. When Adam left the stage to Roger and Brian I didn't miss him and the 2 of them on their solo spots filled the arena. Adam made it feel like watching a musical sometimes with an actor in front of a famous rock band.
It wasn't as if it was bad at all but for me it didn't click. It's my personal opinion and I'm sure there are plenty of Queen fans who will disagree with me.
After saying all of that we all had a fun night out as the circus and it's a rarity for me to go to see gigs. I was glad I went along and saw a "big team" play. The show is definitely worth catching."
